Eff January Magazines

Ok, so I'm pretty pissed.  The January 14th issue of People magazine is a Special Double Issue on "How They Did It... Half Their Size!"  It's a double issue all about people who have lost a ton of weight and how they did it.

I read the entire issue cover to cover looking for the usual celebrity gossip, who wore it best, news articles, etc. and nothing (or atleast very little).  Yup, an entire issue dedicated to losing weight.

Now before I continue I want to say that I am not against people who wish to lose weight nor am I against self improvement.  I AM however against an entire issue of PEOPLE magazine dedicated solely to showing readers different ways to lose weight and it being released as the first issue of the new year.  The 'New Year's resolution' issue.

You see, I've done my homework and I happen to know that New Year's resolutions are not very successful and often times have horrible side effects including:  depression, anxiety, social anxiety, and failure.  In fact, I've done so much homework that I have the statistics to prove it.

*Only 8% of people who make New Year's resoluions actually keep them.
*Americans spend $40 Billion a year on diet and weight loss products.
*The average diet pill boasts that you lose on average 3.5 pounds more per month than exercise alone which equates to approximately one bowel movement.  Hmmm... $60-$100 in pills or a bathroom break? (Pardon me.)
*The size of a recommended Jenny Craig meal is a fist full... would that curb your cravings?
*One of the main causes of depression is criticism and nearly 100% of overweight Americans (studied) claim to have been regularly criticized about their weight.
*The diet industry makes over 60% of their $40 billion in the month of January.

Basically, covers of January magazines such as this issue of PEOPLE have Americans convinced that losing half their body weight is a piece of cake (PUN intended).

So this is how it works, the fat cats in the diet industry benefit from these magazines while us poor fatties get to bathe in a pool of self loathing after our New Year's resolution crash diet didn't work.

Count me out fat cats.

  1. Yes, January always sees a spike in Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig ads on TV too -- gyms and gym equipment as well -- the diet industry needs people to fail because that's where the money is.

  2. I'm with you Sarah. Before Christmas we were deluged with weight loss commercials, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, NutriSystem, supplements, shakes, appetite suppressing cookies, and of course January comes along and that's all I hear or see. I don't have to be reminded I'm fat because I know I am and I can work on that without it being constantly thrown in my face.

  3. Oh goodness, I couldn't agree more! I have been on a health kick and slowly changing my life for about a year, and all of a sudden EVERYONE is. Of course I set a goal for this to be a healthier and happier year, but have gone about it much differently than ad campaigns would want me to. I'm refusing to waste my money on crap and I find it so sad that millionaires are made from convincing people they need to!

  4. I love this post, you are so right! I don't bother with new years resolutions at all because I know that by the end of January I will have ditched them completely. But a 'losing weight' resolution is very hard.

I don't think the magazines show enough how hard it can be, they just show the before and after and people will start thinking like 'oh I can do this too'. And they probably can, but they won't see the results straight away and that's when they just ditch it. I don't think it's right to dedicate a whole issue to weight loss, there are other things happening in the world, like the Oscar nominations and well the usual gossip that we are sometimes interested in!

  14. I learned long ago that New Year's resolutions are a waste of time. I would be a bit worried, though, if my poop weighed 3.5 pounds. That's seems like quite a bit :)

  17. I recently finished my 2 year lonf journey of loseing 140 pounds. It was the hardes most rewarding thing I've done besides giving birth to my two boys..lol I dont believe in diets and new years resolutions. I started in October and I still eat every single thing I want..I just eat less of it now and move more.

The magazines in the U.S. are awful when it comes to showing everyone how it can be done..the healthy food in the U.S. is a whole other topic..and I am an American but now live in The Netherlands. The quality of food and overall health has gone up 5000%..I do miss home..Im an Oregonian aswell :)
